1. Open Access Models

The open access model depends on the journal. The selected model and any fees will be stated clearly on each journal page.

Diamond Open Access (Diamond OA)

  • No charges for authors and no charges for readers.

Gold Open Access (Gold OA)

  • The article is freely available to readers.

  • An Article Processing Charge (APC) may apply, depending on the journal’s policy.

Creative Commons licensing

  • Open access articles are typically licensed under Creative Commons (CC) licenses.

  • The license defines how others may reuse the work with appropriate attribution.

2. License Types

License options depend on the journal. If multiple licenses are offered, authors may be able to choose from the options below (as stated by the journal):

CC BY 4.0 (Attribution)

  • Allows maximum dissemination and reuse, including commercial use, with required attribution.

CC BY-NC 4.0 (Attribution–NonCommercial)

  • Allows reuse with attribution for non-commercial purposes only.

Important

  • Always verify the available license options on the journal page before submission.

  • License selection may affect reuse permissions and funder compliance.

3. Article Processing Charges (APC) and Waivers

APC policy is defined at the journal level.

APC status

  • Some journals may offer $0 APC (Diamond OA).

  • If an APC applies, the fee amount will be displayed on the journal’s author information.

Waiver policy

  • Waivers or discounts may be available for eligible authors (e.g., researchers without institutional funding or from eligible regions).

  • Eligibility and the application process are stated on the journal page.

Note

To avoid confusion and ensure accuracy, APC amounts should be treated as journal-specific and must be confirmed on the selected journal page.
